Dental implants are artificial teeth that are fixed onto the bone to replace damaged or missing natural teeth. Dental implants are easily the best option for those who have lost a few teeth in accident or due to decay.
Dental implants are the answer to dental problems caused by missing or decayed teeth. When you lose a tooth, you lose your confidence along with it. You may not be able to face people the way you used to because your smile is no longer attractive. Dental implants are now an indispensable part of cosmetic dentistry in Kerala, as implants improve the overall appearance of a person considerably. It’s no exaggeration to say that nowadays dental implants have become as important as teeth whitening.
Nowadays most people prefer dental implants to dentures because it’s more like the original teeth. The fact that the implants are fixed onto the gum makes them work like original teeth while dentures need to be removed and cleaned every day.

Dental implants are made of pure titanium which is accepted by the human body easily. Neatly inserted implants will not cause any problems to the gum or bone in future. Before the doctor can decide on placing the implants, s/he needs to make sure that the gum and bone are healthy enough to hold the implants. Oral hygiene is a key factor during dental implants.
Dental implants are of two types. Conventional implants done in phases over two-three months and implants done on a single day. You can do dental implants to replace a a single missing tooth, multiple missing teeth or for the whole set of teeth in your mouth.
If you plan to replace all your teeth with implants, you will require dental bridges (implant bridges).
Dental implant procedures
- Doctor will take an X-ray or CT scan to assess the quality of remaining bones.
- Models of your mouth are prepared to check the available space in your mouth and to decide on the kind of implants required.
- The titanium roots of the implants are placed onto the bone using a mild surgical procedure. It will take 2 to 3 months for the roots to get amalgamated into the bone.
- Once the roots are strongly fused onto the bone, an abutment is attached to each root.
- Crowns (replacement teeth) and bridges are placed on the abutment and tightened using screws. Sometimes the crowns are cemented onto the implant.
If you opt for a one-time procedure, you will need to undergo a slightly complicated surgical procedure to fix the implants and abutment onto the bone.
Titanium roots are stronger than natural roots and they last a lifetime if properly taken care of.
You need to visit your dentist regularly after treatment. Maintaining your implants requires the same level of care as your original teeth. Your implants should always be clean and free from plaque.
